Last week Massachusetts finally ended their never-ending saga by opening the state’s first recreational marijuana dispensaries. And we already know how much money they made.
The Massachusetts Cannabis Control Commission says that dispensaries in the state sold $2.2 million worth of marijuana in the first five days of legal sales. The commission also noted that the average customer spent $39.33 while visiting the Massachusetts dispensaries.
To put that in perspective, the state of Colorado sold around $5 million worth of marijuana in its first week of operation, which is quite a bit more than in Massachusetts. However, there were only a couple of dispensaries open for business in Massachusetts in the first week, and more will be opening in the coming weeks. So it may not be fair to compare Massachusetts’ sales to Colorado’s sales.
The interesting thing to watch is whether Massachusetts starts seeing large numbers of out-of-state residents making cannabis purchases over the coming months, once more dispensaries are open. Massachusetts is the first state east of the Mississippi River to legalize recreational marijuana sales, so you know many people in the New England area are interested in making a quick trip to get some legal weed.
